Even if your separation is amicable there may be steps you should take to secure your privacy during the divorce process and beyond. With the accessibility of digital platforms, sometimes people have tendencies to put thoughts and feelings in a public domain. Here are a few things to be aware of:

Top Tips for digital pitfalls during separation:

  • Change your passwords: To stop inadvertently disclosing documents and emails. Important for all shared accounts such as banks, online shopping, etc.
  • Set up a new email account: This can help with secure communication with your lawyer.
  • Social media, DOs: Ensure you review your privacy settings. If you feel you are vulnerable, you should ensure that your location settings are switched off.
  • Social media, DON’Ts: Did you know that your social media posts can be used in Court? This means that you should not:
  1. Post anything about the other party
  2. ‘Overshare’ in the heat of the moment
  3. Post anything about the proceedings (which are private and should remain so)
  4. Get tagged in posts where your location can be recognised

Not feeling safe during/following a separation?

In some cases where a person is particularly vulnerable and/or may have been subjected to coercive control from the other party, additional measures may be necessary.

  • Check handbags or vehicles for tracking devices such as air-tags
  • Check electronic devices for unusual apps, increased data usage, the battery draining quickly or unusual noises when making calls, all indicators that software may have been installed covertly
  • Disable apps such as ‘find my phone’
  • If your phone is linked to a child’s, check settings and shared information
  • Change passwords on camera devices such as baby monitors and doorbells
  • Change passwords on smart devices such as speakers and apps used to control heating or lighting
  • Check notification settings
  • Create a secure password protected folder for financial documents
  • Back up data regularly
