Gemma is a Family Solicitor based in our Yeovil office and is an Associate Director at Battens Solicitors. She qualified as a solicitor in July 2006 and joined Battens in 2016, specialising in children law matters. Gemma is a member of the Law Society's Children Law Accreditation Scheme and was promoted to Associate Director in July 2026.
Gemma has a broad range of experience in both private law disputes, where child arrangements need resolution and in public law matters where a local authority are involved. Gemma has dealt with many complex matters often where her clients face the most serious of allegations.
Gemma is also able to advise victims of domestic abuse and can help them seek protective orders under the Family Law Act.
She spends 90% of her time dealing with children law matters (both private and public), and 10% dealing with domestic abuse cases.
Examples of cases Gemma has dealt with:
- Successfully representing a father obtain a live with order where he had previously been excluded from the child’s life and wasn’t on the birth certificate.
- Successfully representing a mother in care proceedings ensuring that her child remained with her, and they obtained protective injunctions against a violent ex-partner.
- Representing an intervenor in care proceedings where they were accused of causing non-accidental injuries to a child. A number of the allegations found not proven.
- Successfully representing a father obtain a shared live with order in private law proceedings so that he spent an equal amount of time with his child.
Gemma has a good rapport with her clients and is known for her high standard of client care and will tailor her approach to ensure any particular needs of her clients are met. Gemma provides steadfast and robust advice but is sympathetic in her approach as she acknowledges that her expert guidance is required during a time that is often very stressful and emotional for her clients.
Gemma also won the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year category at the Devon and Somerset Law Society Awards in June 2025.
