Lesley is a Senior Associate Solicitor in the Family Team and has a wide-ranging practice, devoting all of her fee-earning time exclusively to Family Law. This includes advising both married and cohabiting individuals on a broad range of issues following the breakdown of a relationship, including financial settlements and arrangements for children. She also advises on post and pre-nuptial agreements.
As a member of Resolution Lesley is a dedicated family law specialist who believes that separating couples should try to resolve the issues between them as amicably as possible, particularly where there are children. She is a trained Collaborative Lawyer and takes a collaborative approach when dealing with relationship breakdown to advise and assist her clients through this difficult time.
She has extensive experience in advising matrimonial clients on a wide range of issues involving the family home, family businesses, maintenance claims and pensions.
Lesley represents parents who are unable to agree arrangements for their children on separation. She can also advise and represent parents and extended family members in public law proceedings.
Having qualified in November 1997, Lesley joined Battens in 2015 after starting her legal career in the Court Service before moving into private practice which included working for a well known south west law firm. She therefore brings a wealth of experience to the family team. She is proactive in working with her clients to achieve results.
Examples of cases Lesley has worked on include:
- Successfully negotiating a lump sum settlement for a former husband after the former wife made a claim against him 13 years after they were divorced.
- Acting for a wife in achieving an agreed court order which included sale of the jointly owned property, however the husband refused to co-operate in the sale and so an application was made to the court for enforcement, resulting in the wife receiving her share of the sale proceeds.
- Acting for a husband who was not the owner of the property in which the couple lived, registering his matrimonial homes rights and successfully securing sale of the property and a lump sum payment to him to enable him to be rehoused after the divorce.
- Drafting a pre-nuptial agreement in order to protect our client’s assets from a claim from their spouse in the event of a divorce.
“Lesley has been fantastic in helping me resolve and close a massive chapter of my life.”
“Throughout the whole unpleasant experience, I always felt fully supported by Lesley Powell. Correspondence was extremely prompt and I was kept up to date with everything as soon as it was known by yourselves. I cannot fault the way Lesley dealt with the whole matter, which at times became very frustrating for us both I think.”
“Naomi Knapman of Battens in Yeovil has provided an exemplary service to me in my purchase of a property. I would not only highly recommend Naomi for conveyancing but also her colleague Lesley Powell, also of Battens, who professionally guided me through a very acrimonious 3-year divorce. I owe them both an enormous debt of gratitude. I can now start my new life!”
