Resolution Together

Resolution Together is an innovative approach to divorce and separation in England and Wales, developed by Resolution, a national organisation of family law professionals.

It allows a single, neutral lawyer to work with and advise both spouses jointly, fostering a collaborative and less adversarial pathway to resolving issues related to finances, property, and child arrangements.

This model was introduced following the implementation of the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act 2022, which brought in "no-fault" divorce, further supporting amicable resolutions. This differs significantly from the traditional approach to divorce, where each party instructs their own individual lawyer.

In a traditional divorce, the focus can often become adversarial, with each lawyer advocating solely for their client's individual interests, potentially leading to increased conflict, prolonged negotiations, and higher costs.

Resolution Together, in contrast, aims to de-escalate potential disputes by having one lawyer provide balanced legal advice to both parties simultaneously, encouraging them to work together towards a mutually agreeable outcome.

The benefits of Resolution Together are numerous. Firstly, it can be significantly more cost-effective as couples only pay for one legal professional's time and expertise, rather than incurring separate legal fees. Secondly, it often leads to a faster resolution due to streamlined communication and a shared understanding of the legal process, reducing delays caused by back-and-forth between two lawyers. Thirdly, and crucially, it promotes a less emotionally stressful process by fostering cooperation and reducing conflict, which is particularly beneficial for families with children, helping to preserve co-parenting relationships. Finally, it empowers couples to take control of their own separation, making decisions collaboratively and feeling more involved in shaping their future, rather than having outcomes imposed by a court.

However, it's important to note that Resolution Together is best suited for couples who can communicate openly and where there are no significant power imbalances or concerns about domestic abuse.
