I lead the Construction Team. I specialise in both contentious and non-contentious construction work.
My wide-ranging experience within this discipline allows me to offer my skills to large corporate bodies dealing with substantial disputes. I am also sympathetic to the requirements of smaller organisations and individuals who require a more personal touch, in order to understand the procedures, demands and stresses that disputes can place upon them and their resources.
My aim is quick and effective resolution. I work with clients to try and prevent, rather than provoke, conflict, and to seek early and cost-effective results. However, if a tough stance is required then my robust approach is ideally suited to the task.
On the contentious side, I have been involved in a variety of high value and complex court actions and arbitrations, representing both customers and contractors. I have also participated in numerous adjudications, representing both referring and responding parties. My construction dispute experience ranges through final account, loss and expense, delay and extension of time, and variations cases as well as traditional defect claims. I have acted on matters from domestic property extension, conversion and refurbishment through civil engineering and ground works disputes and complex mechanical and electrical engineering cases, to new housing development contract and defect problems, and from survey and maintenance issues to facilities contract disputes.
I have been involved with matters as diverse as the Diana Memorial in London and the break-up of oil rig platforms in the Falklands.
I am well versed in dealing with and advising on disputes emanating from the JCT and other forms of construction contract.
I also have considerable experience in representing parties in both mediation and conciliation.
On the non-contentious side, I advise on the drafting and amendment of all major and minor standard forms of building contract, as well as on the creation of bespoke contracts. I am also proficient in preparing and negotiating professional team appointments and warranties for architects, surveyors, engineers and others involved in the construction process.
I also advise on the integration of building and engineering contracts into wider development projects.
Having been admitted as a solicitor in 1995, I practised in Bristol and specialised in the construction arena from then through to partnership. I joined Battens in 2012.
I am a trustee of the Architecture Centre in Bristol. It promotes the value of good design, and it aims to increase the awareness and enjoyment of the built environment and to stimulate the demand for design excellence.
I am married with two children. I sail both competitively and socially, and eagerly await the start of the rugby season each year.
