Battens are hosting a bake off to help raise funds for Children in NeedStaff at one of the Granby Industrial Estate’s newest businesses are bringing a version of one of the country’s most popular TV programmes to Weymouth – and it’s all to help Children in Need.

The Great Granby Bake Off is on Friday, November 13 at the Battens Solicitors office in Oxford Court.

And if you work on the Granby it’s easy to get involved. There are three categories – cake, cupcakes and biscuit – at a cost of £2 per class, which goes to charity.

Victoria Knight of Battens Solicitors said: “We always do something for Children in Need and as we’ve just moved to the Granby we decided it would be a nice idea to get the whole estate involved.

“We’ve already started going out with flyers and it seems like it will be something to really capture people’s imaginations, so hopefully there will be lots of entrants.”

Colleague Cherise Luke-Bennett is an experienced baker, having been invited to show off her Victoria Sponge on Bake Off spin off An Extra Slice.

Cherise said: “If I had to give advice to anyone considering entering, I would say, just give it a go. You might surprise yourself. with what you can come up with. Get the kids involved, and have fun.”

The event, which will be followed by a cake sale at 12pm, will be judged by Ian Temple, master craft baker at Sergeant Bun bakery, and Rachel Stretton, from the Dorset Echo.

Ian said: “We will be looking for something really original in the bakes. It is a competition, so make sure you spend some time thinking about what you want to create and practise it.”

Class One is ‘Santa visits Weymouth and Portland’ and contestants will need to bake a decorated cake of their choice, to fit an 8in round board.

Contestants wanting to enter Class Two will need to bake 10 cupcakes of any flavour, depicting a winter scene.

And for Class Three, called ‘Sugar and spice and all things nice’, bakers will need to make 10 biscuits. Judges will be looking for unusual flavours and taste.

Anyone wishing to get involved can enter as many categories as they like. Entrants must work on the Granby Industrial Estate.
