Battens Feedback to Government on Retirement Age

Retirement

Battens Solicitors have gathered the views of local employers and fed them back to the Government as part of a review of the default retirement age.

The current default retirement age is set at 65 but there is a lot of speculation as to whether this will be increased or removed. Local businesses came down firmly on the side of retaining a default retirement age but agreed there could be an increase to 67.

Businesses were concerned about the effect on the economy generally, workforce planning and allowing young people to come in at entry level as well as to allow progress up through the business if a set retirement age was scrapped altogether.

Maeve Vickery, Director and Head of Employment at Battens says "This is such an important issue which will have wide reaching implications on businesses and employees in years to come. Battens felt it was important to get local businesses together and gather views, which we have passed onto the Government as part of their review."
