After a dim forecast of heavy rain at the beginning of the week, the sun was out for the Battens charity beach volleyball tournament last week. The event, organised by the local solicitors for the second year running, took place on Weymouth beach on Thursday evening.
30 teams from all areas of the local business community took part, including Old Mill, New Look, Agincare, DEK, Albert Goodman and the Weymouth Police.
Maria Hunt from Battens Solicitors commented: "we wanted to raise as much money as possible for Dorset based charity the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and would like to thank all the teams and spectators for helping to do this. We have currently raised well over £1000 and are still collecting money in.
Battens worked closely with the volleyball club, along with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to organise the event. Maria continues "The volleyball club, who host the Weymouth Beach R.A.F. Classic Volleyball Event over the weekend, allowed us to use the courts on the Thursday evening. This gave people from the local community a great opportunity to use the outstanding facilities."
Last year's winners were The Leam Guest House and they were back in force this year to defend their trophy, making it through to the finals, after beating Weymouth Football Club in the semi final. A new entry came from the RAF who made it through to the final after just beating New Look in the semis. A close final saw the Leam Guest House reign victorious for the second year, beating the RAF 21-17.
Maria goes on to say, "The most important part of the evening was that everyone had fun on the beach, whilst raising money for a good cause and from the feedback we have received so far, I think we achieved that."
