Battens Beach Volleyball Smash!

New team entry Stratton 10, claimed victory over second year in a row runners up, Team New Look, at the Battens Charity Beach Volleyball Tournament on Thursday evening. In what was at times a very close final Stratton 10 snatched hold of the lead and clung on to win 25 - 11.

For the fourth year in a row the sun was out and the volleyball area of the beach filled with 32 teams from all areas of the local business community, their supporters and spectators. There was a definite friendly yet competitive edge to the air as the teams went head to head in the event.

Agincare, Higos, DEK, Elson Martin and the Dorset Echo were some of the teams represented but it was Stratton 10 from the Stratton Village Hall that were the overall winners, as they stormed through their matches to eventually take the trophy home.

In the knock out round of "the best of the rest", the winners were team Boot Camp Fitness, who defeated the Lucky Losers, after two extra minutes of sudden death match decider play. The final score was 26 - 20.

Maria Brindley from Battens Solicitors said "Each year we try and make the tournament better than the year before, whilst raising as much money as possible for the chosen charity. This year it was The Will Mackaness Trust and currently we have raised over £1000. We would like to thank all the teams and spectators for helping to do this."

Battens hires the courts from the Weymouth Volleyball Club who host the Weymouth Beach R.A.F. Classic Volleyball Event over the weekend. This gives people, from the local community, a great opportunity to use the outstanding facilities.

As well as having the most number of teams ever taking part this year, there was half time entertainment in the form of a Zumba demonstration, from a Weymouth based group and a hog roast and BBQ on the beach from Sharp Events.

Maria goes on to say "For Battens, as the organisers of the event, the most important part of the evening was that everyone had fun on the beach, whilst raising money for a good cause and from the feedback we have received so far, we definitely achieved this."
